EBFRW HISTORY . . . .

The East Bay Front Runners and Walkers (EBFRW) was founded in July 1984 by a group of San Francisco Front Runners living in the East Bay. Our mission is to promote the sports of running, walking and related athletic events for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders and their supporters. Our goal is to have fun, promote healthy activity and to create community.

Strawberry Canyon is a fire trail in the hills
behind the UC Berkeley campus and above
the Lawrence-Berkeley Lab.

Strawberry Canyon in Berkeley

Many of the original members of EBFRW lived in Berkeley so running events were initially concentrated there. Inspiration Point (in Tilden Park) and Strawberry Canyon (photo left) in the Berkeley Hills behind the UC campus continue to be part of our regular schedule.

As membership expanded throughout the East Bay so did our running locations.

Olympic trials are held at Lake Merritt
for single and crew rowing.

The Sequoia Bayview Trail was our first run scheduled in the Oakland hills and then Redwood Park, a beautiful trail shaded by Redwood, Oak, Bay and other California native trees.

Oakland's Lake Merritt (photo left) was soon to follow and remains a popular site for our events.

One of the many popular trails in Redwood Park.

When members from Contra Costa County joined we included the 10K Lafayette Reservoir run and other locations east of the Caldecott Tunnel.

We now include Bay Farm Island/Alameda and Emeryville Marina in our regular schedule and continue to search for more track and trail to appreciate the best views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Please see our Schedule page for the current list of running/walking events.

EBFRW continues to evolve and reflect the diverse interests of its membership. The group has organized cross country and down hill ski trips, relay race teams, hikes, movie nights, museum trips, supports the Gay Games, Out Games and other Front Runners from around the world.
